We Choose to Be Homeless at 60

Phoenix Life Coaching, NLP Life Coach - Homeless Woman
By

Embrace Your Brilliance Life Coaching Phoenix - Homeless WomanThis morning as I was driving to the office, I watched an elderly woman shrouded in a dark brown-black skirt, a dirty black-brown hoodie, with her bare feet encased in skimpy sandals navigating the crosswalk in front of me.  Her demeanor was downcast, she was hunched over and her eyes were focused looking down at the pavement. Drudging slowing across the crosswalk, I wondered if she would make it to the other side before the light changed.

I found myself asking the question:  What kind of choices do we make to be homeless and dirty at 60 pushing a shopping cart?  I tried to imagine why she found herself in this pathetic situation.  Obviously, she was sleeping somewhere dirty, there were large spots of brown dirt on her hoodie.  How did she get there? I heard a statistic once that many of the homeless people became homeless because they had been “put out” of mental institutions and clinics who could no longer afford to care for them.  I wondered, was she mentally challenged, or had she just made unfortunate choices.

Our lives are completely based upon what we believe and what kind of choices we make.  If we believe the “crap” we learn when we are young (i.e., “you’re not good enough,” “you can’t do anything right,” “you’re bad,”  “you’re wrong,” or “you’re stupid”) we can be debilitated for life.

Once we reach adulthood (18-24ish) it is our responsibility to make conscious choices:

  • To Get real with ourselves.  To look ourselves squarely in the eye and own who we currently are, where we are currently at.  Nothing is wrong here.  No judgment here… just an acknowledgement of the current status of ourself
  • To stop blaming others for our emotional, physical, mental, intellectual and financial condition
  • To take responsibility for ourselves, our career, and our life
  • To learn how to emotionally grow up, to have adult boundaries, to problem solve, to communicate our desire at an adult level and to stop acting like a “reactive” toddler
  • To create the life we want to have through conscious choice, goal-setting and planning
  • To surround ourselves with a support community … people who will build us up… tell us the truth … challenge us to rise above… people who model excellence, stability, peace and success
  • To avoid bad influences and “friends” who will “pull you down” or “keep you down”… to “run” when we see them coming.  To stay away from CRAZY and CHAOS.
  • To “be” or “become” the person we wish to be, and keep working on it until we arrive at that place/space
  • To get a dream big enough to make us cry.  If your “why” doesn’t make you cry, it is not big enough.
  • To learn from mistakes and make better choices. To quit beating yourself up feeling worthless and just realize you can make better decisions. To realize that life is one big learning process, and there is nothing wrong.  We are continually getting “feedback” about what works or doesn’t work.  Feedback is NOT FAILURE … it is just feedback.  Feeback is simply new information to add into our formula for next time.
  • To stop acting like the victim and instead “be” or “become” empowered
  • To find people, resources, books, seminars, professionals to help us answer questions and shift our thought processes
  • To quit WHINING and looking for “sympathy” or a “rescuer” and move into action on our behalf
  • To take full responsibility for all the results of our decisions (good results and not so good results)
  • To figure out how to change what we don’t like about ourselves, our attitudes and our life

I wonder, if this poor woman had just smacked herself on the side of her head when she was 24, not listened to the senseless rhetoric stored in her brain recycling itself to her detriment, where would she be now?  What kind of car would she be driving?  What kind of house would she be living in?  Would she be married and have children in college or busy raising their own children? She surely wouldn’t be drudging across the street in a dirty hoodie.

HOW ARE YOUR CHOICES WORKING FOR YOU?  ARE YOU WHERE YOU WANT TO BE RIGHT NOW?  IF NOT, WHAT ARE YOU WILLING TO DO ABOUT IT?

We are all one decision, one choice away from ruin.  We are all one step away from being homeless.  Some would say, “But for the grace of God there I’d be.”  Our decisions are the structure, the foundation that creates our life.

Each and every single one of us has the choice to BE who we want to be.  Unfortunately, many of us are not willing to do the work.  And, yes, it is “work” to undo all the “doing” of the early years (especially when it wasn’t “done” well).  It becomes a lot of thankless work with seemingly small or little result.   Patterns are hard to break.  Patterns of thinking and behavior are ingrained very deeply into our core. Without a PATTERN INTERRUPT that is big enough, no shift is likely to occur.

Some of the quickest ways I know to cut through the crap and reprogram yourself are Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT), Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) and Hypnosis.  Why would you need these kinds of techniques and intervention?  Frankly, these techniques help you to reprogram at the unconscious/subconscious level where all the early programming is stored.  What will take you 5 years in traditional counseling may take 5 minutes or 5 hours instead when one of these techniques are utilized.

Anyone competently trained in these techniques, combined with an intuitive gift for coaching can help you slice through years of negative, unproductive behavior in a short time.

You, as always, are in the driver’s seat of your life and you get to choose which road you drive.

Your mission, should you want it, and decide to accept it … is to become an empowered person living with limitless choices and endless possibility.

Call today 480-343-8700 to schedule your EFT, NLP or Hypnosis session.  Have the life you want.  Be the person you think you are (for real).

What is a Pattern Interrupt?

NLP Pattern Interrupt
By

NLP Pattern InterruptOver time, thinking the same thoughts and doing the same things can stymy creative thought and possibility creation. Not only do we frequently get stuck in the routines of thought and patterns of activity, but neurological patterns and conditioning are created. Neurologically stored patterns can be far more difficult to break or change, hence, the need for a pattern interrupt.

A pattern interrupt (also sometimes called a confusion technique) is an interruption, often unexpected, in the  flow or sequence of activity or thought. The purpose of such an interrupt is to allow for changes from the normal routine of activity and thought processes, to weaken an old strategy or repetitive thought process and to create a space for a new change, possibility or pattern imprinting.

Stress overeating can be a response to a patterned or conditioned thought process.  When a person who has this pattern neurologically embedded becomes stressed it would be possible to interrupt the pattern before the overeating starts.  At the first sign of stress, a predetermined activity can be initiated causing the offending stimulus to lose its effect and power.

In NLP and in life coaching a pattern interrupt is a powerful tool that disarms a person’s knee jerk defense mechanisms and programmed responses.  A pattern interrupt gives people the power to change their behaviors, actions, thoughts, opinions and decisions.  A pattern interrupt is generally something that is completely unexpected, provocative and attention grabbing.

To be clear, a pattern interrupt is not an installation of a new pattern, it merely creates the space for a new pattern to be generated. Pattern interrupts or breaks are generally time sensitive, meaning you  have little time to install a new pattern before your established neurological patterns resumes and you are back where you started.

Having Trouble Getting Motivated?

Success Strategies Coaching - Are You Having Trouble Getting Motivated?

Having Trouble Getting Motivated? Take a look at the Holmes and Rahe Stress Scale, and figure out how much stress and which stress events you have.

By

I think we all find ourselves struggling with motivation at one time or another.

There are varying reasons for not having enough energy or motivation in our lives. And, no, it isn’t because we are just lazy!

Off the cuff, here are a few reasons I can think of for not being motivated:

  • Incomplete projects (which haunt and exact a toll on us, even in our subconscious mind!)
  • Stress (too many stresses and/or directions, projects, events, tasks or people to manage or please)
  • Trying to comply with all the “SHOULDs,” “MUSTs,” “NEED-TOs,” and “HAVE-TOs”
  • Too many people plugged into us, taking our energy, not giving back
  • Not enough people, activities in our life to keep us nourished, nurtured and keeping our love banks full
  • Not having a supportive circle of friends (who are positively motivated)
  • Continually being surrounded by negative people
  • Working in a career field or a job that does not interest or energize us
  • Not eating properly, not getting correct nutrition or exercise

I think that spells out a pretty clear picture of the some of the reasons we are not motivated. If you are having trouble determining reason for stress, check out the Holmes and Rahe Stress Scale, and realize, even GOOD things can be stressful! The Holmes and Rahe Stress Scale is a measurement of how many stressful events have happened to you in one year and the possible effect on your physical health.

While the scale does not give an indication as to the emotional or mental impact of the stress, I believe you can make that hyper-jump yourself.

Now… how to get motivated?

  1. Look at the Holmes and Rahe Stress Scale, and figure out how much stress and which stress events you have. Eliminate or neutralize the ones that are possible, and realize the others have a deadline, termination date or death sentence. For example, you will not be pregnant forever. Also important, we can be the executioner of many of them. We can choose to eradicate many of them by our choices and activities.
  2. Make a list of all incomplete projects, set a deadline for them, and begin to complete them ASAP. Not only will you feel a sense of satisfaction, you will likely feel more energized.
  3. Think of yourself as a power strip. Who is plugged into you and stripping you of precious emotional and physical energy? Evaluate your relationships, determine who is draining your energy and get rid of any deadwood. Stop the needless theft of your energy and time. Focus.
  4. Build, or enlarge your circle of supportive friends; people who are very POSITIVE and who care about you.
  5. Evaluate all the “SHOULDs,” “MUSTs,” “NEED-TOs,” and “HAVE-TOs” going in your mind or coming out of your mouth. Instead of saying, “I should ______,” substitute the word SHOULD with WANT. Now when you say, “I want to _________,” evaluate — do you really WANT to? Decide if you are feeling self-pressure or other pressure to do this thing, then choose what you really WANT to do.

Hope this helps you to evaluate some of the potential reasons you are not feeling motivated.

Dancing with the Stars Not the Scars

Dancing with the Stars Ballroom Dancing

Dancing with the Stars Not the Scars. Tap into your #inner-power to transform negative chatter.

By

REPRINTED FROM MY OLD BLOG:

Today I was reading an article from People Magazine about Cheryl Burke from #Dancing with the Stars. I was struck by the article title, Dancing in the Dark, for I love to dance and it sounded a bit romantic with Valentine’s Day fast approaching.

Well, it wasn’t romantic at all, but several things struck me. Here are some excerpts:

  • The shocking act of abuse may have robbed the dancing with the stars pro of her childhood, but it didn’t crush her dreams.
  • As a kindergartner Cheryl testified against her abuser.
  • Cheryl says, “Dancing is the one thing I can put my full heart and soul into and I’ll never get hurt by it.”
  • She insists, “All the trauma did not stop me from realizing my dreams. There’s no shame.”
  • “I may not be the skinniest dancer on the show, but I love my body.”

So much good stuff to ponder. BTW, she now has 10 seasons of DWTS experience and a growing business empire (including a clothing line and 2 dance studios).

Thought Morsel #1:
Cheryl did not allow what happened to her as a child to crush her dreams. Though along the way she made some poor decisions and bad choices in relationships. She generated the energy she needed to pursue and sustain her dreams.

Take-away:
Don’t make excuses, accept the reality of situations and never give up on yourself or your dreams.

Thought Morsel #2:
As a kindergartner she testified against a pedaphile in a court where he was sentenced to 20 years in prison. Can you imagine doing something like that at age 4 or 5? I can’t. What incredible support she must have had from her family and personal strength to manage this.

Take-away:
No matter how old you are, you can always do the right thing. And, be sure you surround yourself with a supportive network of friends and family.

Thought Morsel #3:
She found something to motivate her that she loved doing — she can dance her heart and soul away without worrying about anything.

Take-away:
Give up worry and fear. Fear paralyzes your mind rendering you inert. Instead of complaining, discover what you are passionate about and then do it with all that you have. Play full-out.

Thought Morsel #4:
There is no shame, despite all the trauma.

Take-away:
Wow, barely 26 and she realizes there is no shame in the truth, or in divulging the truth. She is not burying things that hurt her. Whatever voices may have been going on inside her head, she has managed to come away without shame and judgment on herself. Wouldn’t it be amazing if we could (1) get in touch with all that negative chatter in OUR heads, (2) take CONTROL of it, and (3) come away feeling POSITIVE about ourselves?

Thought Morsel #5:
She says, “I love my body, even if I am not the skinniest dancer on the show.”

Take-away:
Putting her energy into what she loved and became passionate about, surrounding herself with positive activities, perhaps getting coaching or counseling (doesn’t say), taking personal action she managed to come out on the other side feeling great about herself as a person, as a woman and a dancer.

We all have the power within us to transform the negative chatter that can destroy our self-esteem, self-worth, motivation, energy and dreams. It is merely a matter of tapping into it… being willing to go there to all the light and dark places alike.

What About the Experts?

About the Experts Life Coaching Success Strategies for Life

What did we do before there were #experts everywhere? Experts know what they know. But they DO NOT know you! It is critical to distill a true sense of who you are as an individual, to be your word, to do your best daily, to clearly see yourself for who you are!

By

About the Experts and life coaching success strategies for lifeWhat did we do before there were experts everywhere?

I don’t know, but I’d like to think we got along quite nicely without them. That we lived full, satisfying, gratifying lives of no regret.

We have become a society of experts, know-it-alls, do-it-yourselfers, SEO experts, business experts, marketing experts, financial experts, landscape experts, medical experts and so forth. You get it —
experts from all walks of life.

I don’t really mind experts who are truly experts—what I mind is being sold an “expert” and getting in return an ordinary “Joe Blow!” That’s just wrong!

Experts know what they know. But they DO NOT know you! It is critical to distill a true sense of who you are as an individual, to be your word, to do your best daily, to clearly see yourself for who you are!

You have all YOUR answers inside you and know what is the best decision for you to make. You are truly the one who knows you. You are your own expert. You may be blocked or unable to see the answer and activities that are right for you. But, you are the key to your life.

A good coach helps you move past your blocks and limits by asking you clarifying questions and waiting for you to produce the answer from within and then help you implement strategies for success in your life.

Look in the mirror to see – not to admire and primp, but to see the true self reflected back.

Reflect, distill and know.

#RestaurantImpossible Transformational Principles Can Teach Us How To Transform Ourselves

RestaurantImpossible-feature

#Restaurant-Impossible Transformational Principles Can Teach Us How To Transform Ourselves. Wouldn’t it be awesome if someone could swoop in and and in 48 hours with $10,000 transform our lives and thought processes?

By

Restaurant Impossible Life Coaching Principles for Quick TransformationI have been watching a lot of “Restaurant Impossible” lately on the #FOODNETWORK for a couple of reasons:  (1) Chef #Robert-Irvine is attractive,  muscular, and hot — and  (2) for the intrigue – he is an “in your face” straight shooter, “take no prisoners,” tell-it-like-it-is, choleric magician who transforms failing restaurants in two days with $10,000.  It is always fun to see what he can do in two days and how close to the wire he cuts it!

Irvine uses his creativity, experience and resourcefulness as he descends on failing restaurants like a whirlwind  — moving and shaking everything up, interrupting all kinds of #behavioral patterns that are not working.  Irvine  transforms the menu, the interior, ramps up marketing, retrains management and staff — causing paradigm shifts for everyone.

One theme I noticed throughout each of the restaurant makeovers I watched is that he calls each and every restaurant owner to step up and to #be-responsible and accountable for where they find themselves (in debt and failing).  Irvine uncovers their areas of weakness — and in open, direct and authentic conversation addresses key weaknesses with management staff and owners,  asking them if they are ready to “step it up.”

Irvine wants to “teach” them what they need to know to run a successful business.  [He doesn’t just want to “rescue” them from where there presently are, he wants to teach them skills that will sustain them and cause them to be prosperous.]  Much as the saying, “give a man a fish, you feed him for a day, teach him to fish, you feed him for life.”

Irvine’s repeatedly themes are:

  • there are no clearly defined roles here
  • no one has any accountability
  • there is no one in charge, no one managing what is happening
  • you have to know what your costs are, what your money is buying and where it going
Irvine follows-up with the restaurant owners in various time intervals (3 month, 2 years, etc.) to see if “rescuing” them had any long-term stickiness.

Wow! Transformation by storm!

Wouldn’t it be awesome if someone could swoop in and 48 hours and $10,000 later we experienced transformed lives and thought processes?

I’m in.  Are you?

Surprisingly, the same transformational principles Irvine uses as he performs a restaurant makeovers are the same principles that can transform our lives:

  • we must have a clearly defined sense of who we are and what our function/role we choose to play in life
  • we must be personally accountable for ourselves, actions, words, and thoughts
  • we must be “in charge” of ourselves, our choices and our results
  • we must know what we want, why we want it, and how we will get it
So, too, must we  use our creativity, experience and resourcefulness to shake up and change our lives — interrupting old constraining patterns and core beliefs that no longer serve us.  In their place we can install tools that move us forward, change our perception and perspective of people and situations.

“We don’t have to be psychics to predict our future… all we need do is look at our past.”

Are you ready to interrupt non-serving patterns and behaviors and learn the skills and techniques you need to move you forward?  You have all your own answers inside of you!  Like Irvine, I want to teach you and share with you principles and success strategies enabling you to live powerfully with limitless choices.

Investing in Stocks? Take Stock in Yourself!

Investing in Stocks - Investing in Yourself - Personal Empowerment - Life Coaching Phoeni

To be a winner in the stock market requires that you become a student and have knowledge of the market. The same is true for being a successful you.

By

Whether you are investing in stocks and bonds, i.e., the stock market, your future or yourself it really all boils down to the same thing, doesn’t it? What is needed to be successful in stocks is the same thing needed to have a successful future and to be a successful you.Investing in Stocks - Investing in Yourself - Personal Empowerment - Life Coaching Phoeni

The common thread? Knowledge. You must really become a student of the market to have a chance of getting any return on your investment. The same is true of your future… your future depends largely upon what your are planning and doing now. If you gather the necessary knowledge NOW, you will have a successful THEN. If you do not gather knowledge and act upon it in a way which brings forth possibility, then all you have is now and what’s in now.

Being a successful and happy you depends also upon knowledge. Knowing yourself, who you are, what you want and don’t want. You must know what you what from yourself, from your life and from others!

Knowledge and knowing depends largely upon your ability distinguish what you learn. It is the distinctions that we call forth from deep inside us that focuses our desires and align us with what lies before us.

To obtain knowledge you must make the decision, take the time, utilize your intellectual faculties, distinguish and distill what is of importance and finally put into play that which you regard as meaningful and important to create the possibilities for your future successes and happiness.
