One of the Best Neurological Explanations of PTSD

One of the Best Neurological Explanations of PTSD
By
In his Psychology Today Blog Eric Newhouse states,

“I wrote recently that neuroplasticity has the potential to be very helpful to combat vets because a “plastic” brain that has been changed by trauma can continue to change. Good memories can layer over and alleviate the bad ones. My last blog on whitewater rafting as a therapy for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) suggests that this concept works.”

Dr. Norman Doidge’s has written a remarkable book, The Brain that Changes Itself. When asked whether neuroplasticity could be useful as a therapy for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), he responded immediately with a “YES,” and added that Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) was the most promising treatment that he was aware of.A number of coaches and counselors are already using eye movement and desensitization reprogramming and getting promising results.

EMDR helps work a client through an event — remembering a painful incident, but stripping it of its emotional content by asking the patient to follow the therapist’s fingers with his or her eyes.

One of the Best Neurological Explanations of PTSD

This is a bit similar to approaches taken by NLP Practitioners and Masters asking you to minimize or diminish the effects of the actual incident by using techniques such as asking that you have the overwhelming character talk in a cartoon voice, or by asking the client to overlay a picture of a negative feeling with a picture of a positive feeling and start diminishing the photo with the negative feeling while increasing the size and emphasis of the positive feeling picture.Once successfully reframed into a less threatening and less dramatic image and feeling, the memory can once again be safely stored away.

Dr. Francine Shapiro, the founder of EMDR, found that three 90-minute sessions could alleviate symptoms of civilian PTSD in more than 77 percent of the patients she treated.

Another alternative which people find useful is emotional freedom techniques (EFT).

A client is asked to remember a painful incident. Typically the threat is comprised of four elements:

  1. The threat is a perceived threat to survival
  2. The threat overwhelms the coping capacity of the individual which creates a sense of being powerless
  3. The threat creates a feeling of isolation and aloneness

The EFT practitioner will ask the client to tap on a series of acupressure points on the face, torso and hands while remembering the trauma. these are the same points that the Chines have used for acupuncture points for over 4,000 years.

There are many ways to reprogram traumatic memories; among them are EMDR, NLP (neuro linguistic programming), EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique), and Hypnosis.

All these various modalities work to reprogram and reframe events, taking the”sting” of of them to allow individuals to move forward with more postitive response behaviors when triggered again in the future.
